Emily in Paris: Fact vs Fiction

Emily in Paris, truly a girl living all of our dreams in one of the world's most romantic cities. While yes, I understand that this is an unrealistic TV show, I feel like this show has made people think our jobs as marketing agencies is a lot more glamorous than it actually is, even down to people who interview for jobs with us! So how does this show compare to what we do here at Kahani?

Clients going for the biggest idea in the room super easily

Honestly Emily has some pretty epic marketing campaign ideas but she also gets some of the coolest clients. Some of the more out of the box, creative ideas are my favorite which we really try to provide our clients with here at Kahani as well. However, the thing that is super unrealistic is the process of getting client approval. I think the larger clients we have had even are a little bit more involved in the process and need more of a proof of concept sometimes before diving in head first. Clients love out of the box ideas, but the quick turn around is more so unrealistic sometimes as it is portrayed in a show. For example, typically a high profile fashion show is not organized in the span of a week.

Events all the time with designer everything

I once asked someone I was interviewing for an entry level position, "why do you want to work for Kahani?" and her answer to me was "because I want to attend all the cool events and parties". We see a lot of this in the show but the reality is, the events and glamour is about 10% of the job. We are lucky enough to get invited to some really cool opportunities because it is a part of our career but do we attend all of them? No. It is almost impossible to attend every event and continue to show up for our clients, so our attitude is clients first.

Networking / Who you know

I will say this is the one thing that the show accurately portrays. Emily is constantly able to lean on her network of friends / loose connections for some of her campaigns and this is very evident about our work at Kahani. We are constantly connecting people in our network, expanding our network and giving back to the community because we truly believe in collaboration. Collaboration is how Emily is able to do so many successful campaigns in the show and a lot of our big projects here at Kahani also could not have been done without our network. Read more about how to expand your network here.
All in all, I am so glad to see a show that portrays a more creative career in such a positive light, and at the end of the day, it is a fictional TV show that meant to be taken with a grain of salt! Have you watched the show? What are your thoughts?
