Late 2000s Desi Movies I Grew Up Loving
As a child of Indian immigrants, I was constantly being exposed to facets of Indian culture, including language, food, and fashion. But the most compelling and fun aspect of the culture that I experienced by far was entertainment. Bollywood movies were fascinating, hilarious, and provided a great leisure time activity for my family when I was growing up. I remember watching some of the same movies over and over, playing their soundtracks on long drives, and revisiting them to this day with my friends in college. These movies have undoubtedly become some of the most meaningful gems in my life as a second-generation Indian connecting with her heritage. Here are some of my favorites!
Aaja Nachle, 2007
I remember watching this movie so often with my mom as a kid that I thought it was one of the most famous blockbuster Bollywood hits to exist. Turns out, it’s more of a hidden gem that my mom and I enjoyed together; nowadays, it’s hard for me to find another Indian peer who has also seen it! This movie really fostered my appreciation for dance, music, and theater, and has a very nuanced depiction of romance that I barely see in films today. Aaja Nachle holds a very special place in my heart, and I still watch it to this day!
Jab We Met, 2007
Not only are the songs in this movie timeless (I hear them being played at my college campus’s desi parties to this day!) but they are also so colorful and beautiful that they’re impossible to forget. I remember being mesmerized by each and every scene of this film, captivated by Geet’s infectious enthusiasm. Be warned–parts of the movie do get quite heartbreaking, and you will likely cry just as much as you laugh. The film’s character arcs are fantastic and I was so engaged with the plot all the way through. I can’t wait to watch it again!
Salaam-E-Ishq, 2007
Where do I start with this one! Almost four hours long, this movie explores six different love stories and is full of the most incredible twists and turns. This is another film my mom and I would constantly watch together, despite its length and questionable humor. Through each complex relationship, the movie dives into themes like interracial relationships, infidelity, the dark side of fame, and sexual freedom. It is a must-watch for sure.
Dostana, 2008
This movie was one of the very first introductions I had to queer identity, and although I did not fully understand the themes within the film when I was a kid, the songs and the overall vibe really resonated with me. It’s a fun, summery comedy with complicated romances intertwined, and I recently had a great time rewatching it with a friend. We were able to point out numerous scenes that were problematic and toxic as well as moments that were heartwarming and transformational for their time. This is a must-watch for sure!
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, 2008
The storyline of this film was so adorable and exposed me to the idea of unconditional romantic love. Although tragedy strikes at the get-go, the movie follows the journey of healing that a couple takes together. It explores both romantic and platonic relationships through the lens of dance training and competitions, and is such a fun watch. Also, the soundtrack does not miss.
It was so fun to reminisce about the movies that shaped a big part of my life in the late 2000s! What 2000s movies do you love or want to see us feature? Let us know!
