9 South Asian Beauty Brands You Should Know About
As a South Asian owned business, we love supporting other South Asian owned businesses. As a predominantly female run company, we can’t help but love writing about beauty brands! So here we are, compiling a list of South Asian owned beauty brands you should know about:
Started by Rooshy Roy, Aavrani is a skincare line whose roots lie in Rooshy’s grandmother’s beauty rituals, when Roosy and her family would visit Kolkata. With an array of products from serums to toners, masks to exfoliators, Aavrani emphasizes holistic rituals that focus on process vs routines that place the focus on outcomes.
Founded by two sisters, Shaz and Kiku, Shaz and Kiks haircare stems from ancient Indian Ayurvedic practices that have been passed down from generations within their family. The sisters created their own innovative product, called the “scalp + hair prewash” that was inspired by these recipes.
Kulfi Beauty is a makeup line started by Priyanka Ganjoo, who worked in the beauty industry behind the scenes helping indie brands grow their businesses, while noticing a void of South Asian representation. She took it upon herself to fill that void and create products that celebrate and really cater to the beauty of South Asian women.
Founded by Zareefa Arije, Ammu Beauty is a heart-touching love letter to Zareefa’s late mother, who passed away in abruptly in February 2020. Wanting to honor her mother, as well as the recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, Ammu Beauty was born. Using all natural ingredients in modern formulas, Ammu Beauty's results speak for the brand.
Meera Beauty Co represents South Asian beauty in a more creative and loud part of the cosmetic space. BIPOC and LGBTQ founded, Meera Beauty Co offers bright pigmented eyeshadow palettes with diasporic names, such as Bombay Baby and Holi Grail. South Asian makeup can often be associated with all natural products and minimal looks, but Meera Beauty Co definitely disrupts that notion.
Created by Pritika Swarup, Prakti is a representation of the multi-faceted lives women from India lead, despite living in or coming from a land of traditions. With nutrient rich, Ayurvedic products, Prakti aims to amplify women’s natural beauty and individuality.
Started by Sravya Adusumilli, Mango People Cosmetics is the product of all natural elements like fruits and flowers, coming together to provide rich pigments for melanated skin. With easy to use stick products, Mango People offers effortless makeup for all skin types.
Started by Sarah Shah, a lawyer who was struggling with acne and was frustrated with her routine of layering multiple skincare and cosmetic products. She saw the void the industries had for medium to deeper skin tones with underlying issues and took it upon herself to create Journ, an ode to each woman's unique journey.
Founded by Deepika Vyas and Tanuj Nakra, they used their backgrounds in medicine and pharmaceuticals to create skincare products that use the modern power of science and the natural power of ayurvedic ingredients. The name Avya in Sanskrit means the “first rays of the sun", which was chosen to celebrate a more radiant you, by having your outer beauty and inner beauty shine through.
