Online vs IRL Shopping

Retail therapy thoughts from someone who’s been on both sides of the cart.

Have you ever found yourself wondering where did all my money go? — then realizing it either disappeared through a string of online checkouts or got swiped away in a mall on a random Saturday? And who says money can’t buy happiness? You must be lying… or just haven’t clicked “add to cart” at 2AM.

There’s really something about retail therapy. The rush of thinking twice (or three times) about a product, hovering over the “Buy Now” button, or walking circles around a store deciding if you really need another white shirt. Is it just me? Or is there something oddly therapeutic about the choice between online vs. in-real-life shopping?

Let’s break it down.

Online Shopping

Pros:

  • Vouchers, promos, flash sales at midnight.
  • No lines, no awkward small talk. Just you, your cart, and a credit card (just make sure your credit card is secure and not on a wild shopping spree of its own).
  • You can shop in pajamas at any hour, with chips in hand.

Cons:

  • Not everything is legit. Be careful with fake shops or replicas — read reviews, check if the store is verified, and do your research.
  • Waiting game: even with free shipping, your cart-to-doorstep moment might take days or weeks.
  • Size charts can be deceiving. That “oversized” shirt might fit your cat instead.

But still, nothing beats the joy of a parcel arriving like a surprise gift. Someone knocks… and suddenly your “From me, to me” present is here. My love language? Tracking number plus “your parcel is out for delivery.”

In-Person Shopping

Pros:

  • You get to feel the product. Try it on. Smell it. See the real color in real lighting.
  • Instant gratification: buy now, bring home now.
  • You can discover unexpected finds — like those cute socks near the counter that somehow end up in your bag.

Cons:

  • Malls mean crowds, long lines, and energy drain. Not ideal on introvert mode.
  • You often buy more than you need just because you saw it.
  • Fitting room fatigue — especially when you’ve already done your makeup and now you’re sweating under mall lighting trying on jeans.

But the best part? Channeling your inner TV fashion icon, arms full of paper bags, strutting like payday just dropped (because, well, it did).

So… which one wins?

Honestly? I love both. Each has its own magic. The key is to shop mindfully.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I really need this?
  • Does this spark joy or heal my inner child?
  • Am I buying this because I want it, or because I’m bored and the algorithm knows me too well?

At the end of the day, shop if you want to — just don’t forget to save for the bigger things too. Because yes, shopping feels good… but financial peace? That’s a luxury too.
