Curating vs Connecting in the Digital World

Why is it so hard for people to connect? We now live in a digital age where we have so many ways to express ourselves and have those expressions be accessible to almost anyone, everywhere. Maybe that scares most people but I love the idea that my thoughts, emotions, and identity can find resonance beyond the confines of physical limitations.

Why simply curate your presence to the world when you can make it the most thorough and accurate summary of yourself? Is everyone really that afraid to be seen? To be known?

Who cares about rejection if someone is rejecting a shade of you because you were not confident enough to put your most authentic self forward? I hate rejection as much as the next person (I really do struggle with this), but it ultimately benefits me because then I know if someone truly does not align with who I am. I simply cannot care what everyone thinks of me because I want to attract those who do connect and resonate with the person I really am. What’s the point of being accepted if you hide the very parts of yourself that matter most?

The fact that people work so hard to hide who they are and present a stifled layer of themselves just doesn’t sit well with me. How is it that people will spend so much time curating an expression of themselves without ever expressing anything at all? To do so much, presenting as if there are layers, to never reveal anything at all is crazy to me. Who knows what you miss out on when you exert so much effort to remain aloof.

It’s always a bit tiring meeting people when it’s a one-sided connection they benefit from. Yes I am a gem, a ray of sunshine and an absolute joy to be around. Thank you for letting me yap at you, I do have quite a bit to say. I love the acknowledgement but resent the use. I love connecting with people but hate feeling like I don’t get the same energy back. I love meeting new people, but it does hurt when I realize the bond was a bit more genuine for me. Or realizing they are just a graffitied wall and only look interesting and intriguing.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – the lack of reciprocity will still never make me closed off. I know what I have to offer is rare and not easy to return. A big reason for why I pour my heart out on the internet is that I never know who it can reach and resonate with. And that possibility so beautiful to me!

In a world where we are divided more than ever, I believe it to be so important to find genuine connections and hold onto it. I’ve always wanted to be seen but I want to see you, too.
