South Asian Representation at the MET Gala
The MET Gala, aka the best fashion show of the year, showcased some of the highest fashion looks of the season. The theme of this year’s event was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and the dress code was “The Garden of Time”. Several South Asian celebrities and designers attended the gala, and represented South Asian craftsmanship on the global stage.
Alia Bhatt
Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt made her debut at the MET Gala last year wearing a custom Prabal Gurung white pearl gown, and viewers were impressed by the details and Bhatt’s ability to carry the heavy gown. This year, Alia came back to the red carpet with a stunning display of South Asian artisanship, wearing a bespoke Sabyasachi green, pink and white embroidered saree, embellished with jewels and pearls. The saree took over 1965 hours to create, with 163 artisans working to create the jaw dropping saree.
Mindy Kaling
‘The Office’ star wore a custom Gaurav Gupta gown as she walked the red carpet. Gaurav Gupta’s designs have been making their way to the forefront of mainstream fashion, and he yet again made heads turn with a creative neckpiece.
Simone Ashley
Simone Ashley was definitely the diamond of the ball as she donned a midnight blue sparkling Prabal Gurung lehenga gown. We love that Ashley added in hair extensions to accentuate the cuts of the two piece lehenga - gown, and she looked stunning.
Ambika Mod
Mod brought back timeless fashion and looked glamorous at the Met Gala wearing a satin Loewe gown. Her dress also held a superimposed design of a vintage Charles James gown on the corset and bust, bringing vintage designs back to the red carpet.
Mona Patel
Viewers quickly became obsessed with Patel’s unique and stunning gown on the red carpet. Styled by Law Roach, Patel wore a custom Iris van Herpen strapless gown adorned with butterflies on her arms that moved on their own!
