Being single in your 20’s

With the release of Taylor Swift’s new album ‘The Tortured Poet’s Department’ (Swifties unite!), one song particularly stuck out to me. ‘The Prophecy’ struck a nerve within me as I was listening to the album, because it seemed to speak to my feelings as someone who is and has been single for a while. The lyrics explain how it feels as someone who has to watch the rest of the world around them find their person, while feeling alone.

It’s interesting being single in your mid-twenties, especially when the rest of your friends are in long-term relationships. While you’re happy for them, you can’t help but wonder when it’s going to happen for you.

It also doesn’t help that within the South Asian community, there’s an added sense of pressure to find your “forever person” by the time you’re in your mid-twenties. I can’t even count how many times aunties at weddings or parties have asked me if I’m dating someone, and whether they should introduce me to potential marriage partners.

Although it’s hard being single during what people consider the “prime” of your life (which is debatable), I’m grateful for the amount of alone time I have, because I’ve learned so much about myself. And who knows, maybe my prophecy will change!
