All I Do Is Win
What does a win mean to you? Winning to me mean more than just reaching personal and professional goals in life but actually achieving and going after things that truly do make you happy.
I think as South Asian women, we in particular are taught not to celebrate our “wins” because they are merely expectations we are meant to accomplish. Unlearning that takes a while and even when we have shed some of that kind of mentality, we are still not as loud and proud about the things we accomplish.
I am not an entrepreneur carving out my path to 30 under 30. I am not making over 6 figures in a stable career like medicine, law or finance. I’m not even trailblazing on the internet, joining the ranks of young adults who may have proven their parents wrong but are still succeeding in a way that’s “acceptable”. I quite frankly, am not winning at anything in the traditional sense of the word, through the lens of our culture. However, I see women who are achieving those things I mentioned, downplaying their accomplishments.
In contrast, I consider myself winning every day. I am living independently in a city that I have always wanted to live in, after ending a long-term relationship at an age where most women are getting married or having kids. I am pouring into my friendships, laying the seeds for a community I have always yearned for.
All we do is win, everyday and we should celebrate accordingly. Leaving a toxic relationship or job is a win. Setting boundaries with people you love is a win. Putting yourself first and treating yourself the way you deserve to be treated is a win.
We are all winning everyday, it just depends on how you look at it.
