Why I love Hopecore (a poem)

You’re laying in bed.

You’re curled up on the couch.

You’re laying flat on a cold tile floor. Or maybe its carpet –

Its been a long day.

One of a loop of long days that you have been living life is as endless loop

                             I’m spiralling. It’s not that serious/ deep

It’s 6:32 pm.

“I need to make dinner”, you say out loud, in case it breaks the spell you’ve been under for the last hour and thirty two minutes

You can’t help it, you’re rotting. Bleary eyed, screen bright and drying your eyes. You stumble upon a slideshow.

‘Second chances’ by Gregory Alan Iskov playing, it’s a series of Tumblr screenshots.

Hopecore. You breathe out

scroll…

Pause, your eyes don’t skim, but they do well

And slowly, warmth blooms in your chest and you decide “its time to make dinner.”

This poem won’t age well – nothing that uses so much contemporary “internet speak” will. But, thats kind of the point. Hopecore exists as a trend in its own right right now, but that doesn’t mean that the quotes I read won’t always be relevant. Thats the beauty of literature.

I will inevitably find myself lying on the floor after work one day struggling to motivate myself to make dinner. The things I see on the internet will change but the experience will always come back.

Hopecore: one of the better sides of the internet to find yourself on. Seriosuly, some of the stuff that I’ve read or heard from things tagged as hopecore have actually changed the way I try to think about the world (in other words, changed my brain chemistry). Below are a selection of some of my favorites. I hope they bring as much warmth to you as they did for me :)
