As we approach the New Year, you may be gearing up for some pretty spectacular firework shows. As a symbol of the New Year and festivities, fireworks come in many shapes and sizes.
As we welcome in 2025, let’s look at some of the most popular types of fireworks, their impact, and alternatives for people who aren’t into fireworks.
Sparklers
My personal favorite! Not too loud or showy. Also perfect for light art!
Fountains/ Cones
Also a favorite of mine! They’re fun, private and not too showy or loud.
Firecrackers
I hate these ones! Loud and not even that pretty. 0/10
Spinners/ Wheels/ Rings
Like fountains and sparklers, these are nice and easy to do from your backyard without disturbing others.
Aerial Fireworks
The ones everyone think of when we say the word ‘firework‘. They’re showy, but loud and disturbing. These are also the ones that firework banning laws target the most.
Alternatives
You may be able to tell from the commentary, but as much as I love the aesthetics of fireworks, its important to admit that they’re horrible – both for the environment and people. Not only do they produce so much smoke and noise, but the sounds can be triggering to both animals and people.
Your temporary enjoyment is not worth scaring so many others. There are so many things to do in place of fireworks that are just as fun and less harmful. Let’s take a look at some:
Glowsticks
A fun light-show without the noise and smoke!
Bubbles
Also fun visually, and a bit more tactile for the added enjoyment!
Biodegradable confetti
Hard to find, but if you do its so worth it! Or, make your own with dried petals/ leaves.
Candles
Just like we do for Diwali, candles or diyas around the house are perfect for a festive atmosphere.
Floating Paper Lanterns
A bit more specialised, but still possible! If you can find them, they’re beautiful and make you feel like you’re in a story. Plus no noise!!
This year, consider being kinder to the people/ animals/ the environment around you by doing something other than fireworks! There is beauty in the tradition, but it’s important to remember that they are dangerous and harmful. Just because you and the people immediately close to you are not affected, doesn’t mean people and animals in your area aren’t.
